Osteopathy is a hands-on system of examination
and treatment, laying emphasis on the health of those tissues that
generally define our structure. That is our skeleton, joints,
muscles, and connective tissue which package, compartmentalise,
and position all our organs, nerves, and vessels.
It is distinctive in the fact that it recognises much of the pain
and disability we suffer, stems from abnormalities in the function
of this structure and our misuse of it. It premises that a healthy
functioning structure will encourage a healthy body overall.
Please note. Osteopaths are not trained in medicine, and therefore
you must always refer to your medical practitioner if you have
medical concerns.
Your Osteopath draws on many of the conventional
medical assessments and tools for diagnosis. The main strength of
Osteopathic practice however, lies in the unique way the patient
is assessed from a mechanical, functional and postural standpoint;
and the manual methods of treatment applied. Osteopaths aim to
reduce strain in structural tissues by using hands-on techniques
such as massage targeting specific areas, stretching of joints and
connective tissue, articulation, mobilisation, and muscle energy
techniques amongst others; to help improve circulation, movement,
and function.
As part of the whole person approach to health, an Osteopath may
advise you on exercise programs, postural/ergonomic and lifestyle
changes, & nutritional advice to better your treatment,
recovery, and subsequent management.
A variety of patients from newborns to the elderly visit Osteopaths regularly as part of their overall health management. Issues vary from dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system, to ailments that may arise from this.
